Ohio Young Birders Club (OYBC) is for young people ages 12 – 18 that have an interest in birds and nature. The mission of the program is to encourage, educate, and empower our youth conservation leaders. The OYBC formed in 2006 when Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) brought together six young birders to brainstorm about the idea. Ohio now has five regional chapters helping to connect young people with birds and nature and bring them together with other youth around the state. The statewide program is coordinated by BSBO’s Education Director, Laura Guerard. The OYBC serves as a model program for youth birding programs around the country. To date, the BSBO education staff has assisted 16 other states in building their own programs patterned after the OYBC.
On November 4th, OYBC will be holding their 11th annual statewide conference at Aullwood Audubon Nature Center & Farm. All of the presenters, including the emcee, are students. The event is open to people of all ages, and you don’t have to be an OYBC member to attend! Please consider registering and attending this inspiring event and supporting our youth conservation leaders.
Columbus Audubon is a sponsor of the OYBC Central Ohio Chapter. We appreciate the support they give, helping our local youth to have special birding and nature experiences. We would like to thank outgoing advisors Tim Daniel and Nina Harfmann for their time and energy with the OYBC Central Ohio Chapter. Please welcome new advisor, Maura Rawn, and returning advisor, Darlene Sillick, who start Nov 1st. We are in need of one more co-advisor and you can contact Laura Guerard at email@example.com or 419-898-4070 to learn more.
You can also join OYBC as an adult supporting member, as a volunteer, or as a sponsor at a variety of levels. Please visit the www.ohioyoungbirders.org to learn more about this dynamic program and how you can show your support! And if you know a young person between the ages of 12-18 who is interested in birds and nature, please tell them about the OYBC!
We hope to see you at the 11th Annual OYBC Conference on November 4th at the Aullwood Audubon Nature Center in Dayton.
