Greetings Ohio Audubon Chapters,

Over the past few months you spoke with Western Cuyahoga Audubon (WCAS) web and marketing manager, Betsey Merkel.

Our initial purpose was to update the list of Ohio Audubon chapter contacts, phone numbers and website links. Email inquiries and telephone conversations connected us to Board officers and representatives of every Audubon chapter in Ohio.

Here’s what we learned:

  1. Everyone expressed a desire to connect with other Audubon chapters in Ohio to share ideas and success stories in hopes of identifying solutions to persistent, tough local challenges.
  2. Chapter representatives expressed serious concern over a lack of communications and engagement by National Audubon Society with their chapter.
  3. National Audubon Society chapter reach to Ohio’s 88 counties fell to 38% in 2017 from a reported 58% in 2006. (See, “Strategic Plan of the Council of Ohio Audubon Chapters 2006”)

In response to the need to bring Audubon chapters in Ohio together, Western Cuyahoga Audubon started to make plans for a fall gathering of Ohio chapters. This plan has been rescheduled to March 2018. We’re assembling a September Northeast Ohio planning group for the spring meeting. We’ll share updates and a survey for your suggestions so your voice can be heard.

Forward this letter to your Board and chapter members. We invite questions and comments.

Thank you and until next month,

Nancy Howell, WCAS Board member
Tom Romito, WCAS Board member
Betsey Merkel, WCAS Web and Marketing Manager
